Chinon, a City of Art and History

Le restaurant La Maison Rouge

In 2000, Chinon signed a City of Art and History convention with the French Ministry of Culture and the département (district) of Indre-et-Loire.

With this convention, the city commits to promote heritage through actions led by a professional team - a heritage and architecture facilitator as well as lecturer-guides - recruited under the aegis of the Ministry who guarantees their qualification.

The Heritage Department, in collaboration with the Tourist Information Center, provides year-round visits to groups and individuals wishing to discover the rich city’s rich heritage.

Appropriate activities are proposed to younger visitors, during and after school hours to guide their discovery of the architectural environment, materials, landscapes...

It also proposes brochures and flyers, as well as information panels to allow self-guided discovery of Chinon and its landmarks. Each year thematic exhibitions are organized in the Heritage House on a specific aspect of the city’s heritage.

The Department coordinates the public openings of the main sites in the lower town (St. Mexme Collegiate, St. Radegund chapel), in partnership with the Carroi museum, and events such as the Heritage Days, a national event held yearly on the 3rd weekend of September.
